Elephant The elephant is believed to understand human speech, it is herbivorous, and drinks wine. It fears serpents, fire and smoke, and lions. The elephant symbolizes strength, sagacity, and prudence. It also represents power or energy. It is also one of the Seven Treasures of Buddhism and is sacred to Buddhism. Near the cities of Beijing and Nanking gigantic monoliths of elephants line the way to the tombs of the Ming Emperors. There is also a myth associating the elephant with fertility.
